Saddam Hussein, also spelled Ṣaddām Ḥusayn, in full Ṣaddām Ḥusayn al-Tikrītī, Baghdad), president of Iraq (1979–2003) whose brutal rule was marked by costly and unsuccessful wars against neighbouring countries.

Saddam began to assert open control of the government in 1979 and became president upon Bakr’s resignation.

In July 1968, Saddam Hussein arranged and executed a cleanse of non-Ba’ath Party individuals in the Iraqi government. All through his long term rule, Hussein is assessed to have killed as much as 1,000,000 individuals. Following the intrusion by the United States and its partners in 2003, Saddam was caught and sentenced for wrongdoings against humankind by an Iraqi court. Hussein was subsequently executed for these violations.
